South Dakota Constitution was adopted by Constitutional Convention on July 4, 1889. It was ratified by vote of the People on October 1, 1889. It became effective on November 2, 1889. It consists of a preamble and 29 Articles.
According to Article 23, the three different ways to amend the South Dakota Constitution are:
- Initiated constitutional amendments.
- Legislatively-referred constitutional amendments.
- A Constitutional covention under Section 2 of Article XXIII.
