North Dakota Constitution

The North Dakota Constitution was adopted by Constitutional Convention in August 1889.  It was ratified by vote of the People on October 1, 1889.  It became effective on November 2, 1889.  The North Dakota Constitution consists of a Preamble and 13 Articles.

The three methods to amend the North Dakota Constitution are:

  • initiated constitutional amendments,
  • legislatively-referred constitutional amendments, and
  • constitutional conventions.
